I have been a pilgrim - walking to Santiago and in other places. Like many, I have read books to support my success along the route, or to understand the changes in my heart and soul, or to just survive this period of restrictions. I've even read some history of the art and architecture of the regions.But in this book Roy brings together the big picture of the history of pilgrimage to allow the reader to understand perhaps that feeling inside that invites us to the process and supports our journeys. I found his ability to move from the small details along the way that engage our five senses to recent history and beyond to more ancient history engaging our ancestral senses. He reminds us that this pilgrimage process has been a part of the lives of people for a long time.Along with his earlier book, Stone and Water, this is a great one to read while waiting to again walk this particular set of routes from Portugal to Santiago or to walk in your own neighbourhood, alert for the signs that people may have walked that path for the same reasons, for a long time.Finally, I want to say that as an older American, now enjoying life along the Camino in Spain, Roy's use of language is engaging and fresh.
